It was in the 1990s when she was an eight-year-old alter server that Father Sabine Griego singled her out and began abusing her – sexually and physically. She kept it to herself for years because the priest threatened that he would kill her or cut out her tongue or harm her mother. It wasn’t until years later, after Griego relocated, that she told her parents.
Griego has been charged with assaulting more than 30 children. To make matters worse, the Archdiocese of Santa Fe knew of the rape allegations against the eight-year-old girl for at least 15 years and likely much longer.
Griego was put on leave from the church in 1993. Between 1993 and 1995, he was implicated in eight closed cases filed in New Mexico. He was not formally dismissed from his clerical duties until 2005. Law enforcement was not made aware of the alleged abuse until 2018, even though, in 1994, another priest reported Griego to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
