What Is Roblox?
Roblox is a popular online gaming platform developed by Roblox Corporation, in which users interact with each other and play games created by other users. Roblox is not just a game; rather, it’s a platform that hosts millions of individual games created by its userbase, which run the gamut from roleplaying games to racing games to action-adventure games. Though elements of the game are free, users make in-game purchases with a virtual currency called Robux.
While the platform itself is rated T for Teen, individual Roblox games can vary in maturity level. Much like YouTube, the platform has both child-friendly videos and videos that might be too mature for younger viewers. According to tech news website The Verge, Roblox claims that it has over 120 million active monthly users, including about half of all U.S. children under the age of 16—a fact that may make the platform particularly appealing to sexual predators.

Over the last several years, a slew of allegations have surfaced of abuse and exploitation of minors on Roblox due to the platform’s lack of effective guardrails and parental controls.
A 15-Year-Old California Boy Commits Suicide After Alleged Online Grooming
NBC News reports that a woman has filed a lawsuit in the San Francisco County Superior Court alleging that her 15-year-old son committed suicide after being coerced into sending explicit images over the web. Rebecca Dallas accuses Roblox and the communication app Discord of “recklessly and deceptively operating their business in a way that led to the sexual exploitation and suicide” of her child, Ethan. Dallas’s lawsuit claims that Ethan began playing Roblox when he was 9, and with his parents’ approval and establishment of parental controls.
However, Dallas says that an adult male sex predator began targeting Ethan when he was 12. The man posed as a child and engaged Ethan in what were at first innocuous chats. However, the man allegedly began steering conversations toward topics of a sexual nature. He encouraged Ethan to turn off parental controls and send him sexually explicit photographs. Dallas accuses the man of using these images to blackmail Ethan into sending more explicit photos and videos. This eventually left the teen scarred and haunted by the experiences. Ethan died by suicide in April 2024.
Dallas’s lawsuit against Roblox and Discord alleges wrongful death, fraudulent concealment and misrepresentations, negligent misrepresentation, and strict liability.
Man Allegedly Poses as Boy to Groom 11-Year-Old Girl in New Jersey
According to NBC 10 Philadelphia, a lawsuit filed in the Superior Court of Camden County argues that a man posed as a boy in order to entice an 11-year-old girl into sending him sexually explicit images of herself. According to the filing, the victim began communicating with the alleged perpetrator through Roblox and Discord. After gaining the girl’s trust, the lawsuit claims the man began sending inappropriate messages and sexually explicit photos of himself. He eventually convinced her to turn off parental controls and send him sexual photos of herself. The woman’s mother alleges that while Roblox and Discord claim to be safe spaces for children, they did not have robust enough safety policies in place to prevent her daughter’s abuse.
Two North Carolina Families Sue Roblox, Discord for Creating “Haven for Adult Sexual Predators”
Lawsuits have been filed in the Northern District of California on behalf of two North Carolina teen girls. The girls were separately allegedly targeted by adult abusers on Roblox and Discord, WRAL News reports.
In one case, the family of a Cumberland County girl allegedly encountered an adult man who pretended to be a child. Once he had gained the girl’s trust, the suit says the man began pressuring her to send him sexually explicit images in exchange for Robux. These conversations occurred on Discord. The experience was so traumatizing that the girl required psychological counseling.
The second suit alleges that Joseph Randall of Baton Rouge, then a 20-year-old resident of Baton Rouge, began communicating with a then-13-year-old girl in Wake County through Roblox before moving the conversations to Discord. It further says that Randall sent the girl explicit photos of himself and pressured her to reciprocate. He eventually encouraged her to self-harm.
Authorities arrested Randall in January 2025. They charged him with indecent behavior with juveniles, computer-aided solicitation of a minor, and possession of child sexual abuse material involving children younger than 13. Attorneys for the Wake County teen say she was just one of many victims Randall targeted throughout the country.
As with the other cases, the North Carolina families accuse Roblox and Discord of failing to include sufficient guardrails protecting children and of fostering a “haven for adult sexual predators and pedophiles.”
